Movie Review: Zootopia!

*Disclosure: My family received passes to attend this movie. All opinions posted here are mine and mine alone.

Last week  my family and I had the chance to attend a movie that we'd all been looking forward to- Disney's Zootopia. Three of us had seen the trailer when we saw the new Star Wars movie and I showed it to my daughter before we went to the movie, so we were all excited when it was finally time to watch. Before I get into our thoughts, here's a bit about the movie, from a press release that I received.

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery.
This movie is very clever and very funny, but it has some important messages about tolerance and prejudice as well. My husband and I agreed that these were handled in a way that was thought-provoking, but not heavy handed. The kids loved the animals and the beautiful scenery of the various locations that Judy and Nick traveled to while solving a mystery. The plot is good and moves quickly and has some great twists.

My kids haven't stopped talking about the movie since we saw it! There were a few scenes in which my daughter (6 1/2 years old) hid her face briefly, but nothing that frightened her more than that. And the funny scenes more than made up for her brief fear. All in all, a beautifully made movie that the whole family will enjoy!
