DVD review and giveaway (two winners!): A Little Game

*Disclosure: I received a copy of this DVD to review for myself, as well as the opportunity to give away two copies. I received no other compensation and all opinions posted here are mine and mine alone.

My kids started playing chess this fall and are currently fairly obsessed with it.  So when I got an email asking me if I wanted to review a new movie called A Little Game, and saw that it was about a young girl who plays chess, I agreed immediately. Here's a little bit about the movie, from a press release that I received:

CAST:  RALPH MACCHIO (Karate Kid)JANEANE GAROFALO (The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Bravo's “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce”), RACHEL DRATCH (NBC's "Saturday Night Live") and OLYMPIA DUKAKIS (Moonstruck, Steel Magnolias).

SYNOPSIS:  Ostracized at her posh new uptown school and shaken by the death of her beloved grandmother, a 10 year-old downtown girl finds an unlikely mentor in the form of an irascible chess-master, who uses the game to teach Max lessons in resilience, perseverance, and how to embrace inevitable change.

We have seen our fair share of "family-friendly" movies, and typically what my kids are interested in sitting all the way through and what my husband and I want to watch all the way through do not end up being the same thing. But we all four watched this movie together and ended up really enjoying it.  I appreciated the fact that the cast was made up of actors whose work I have enjoyed in the past, and who really seemed to have good chemistry together. The young actress playing Max, Makenna Ballard, did a nice job as a precocious 10-year old girl and I found her charming. Ralph Macchio is as cute as always- my husband had a hard time believing me that it was the Karate Kid all grown up! The movie is just over 90 minutes long and the story moves along well. We thought this was a great choice for family movie night!  This DVD will be available for purchase on January 20, 2015.

Two lucky readers will each win a copy of this DVD for your own collection! Open to US mailing addresses, enter at the Rafflecopter widget below.
