Book reviews: Sports Illustrated for Kids presents What are the Chances? and Football Then to WOW!

*Disclosure: I received these books to review for myself. I was not compensated in any other way and all opinions posted here are mine and mine alone.

I've talked about it many times before here on the blog, but I have to say it again. My son, Ethan, loves sports.  He lives for them- pretty much any sport is a great one in his mind! He also loves books, even though he's just a beginning reader. So I'm always happy when he gets great new books with lots of pictures and great colors, so he can look through it and learn about his beloved sports.  I also like books that are easy for us to read in small doses, since I'm not quite as big of a sports fan as Ethan is.  A while back, we received two new books that fit both of  my criteria. They're new from Sports Illustrated for Kids and are called What are the Chances? and Football Then to WOW!  Here's a bit about them, from a press release that I received:

What Are the Chances? (July 22, $14.95, Ages 8 and up) is broken up into sections of accomplishments from rare, really rare, super rare, almost impossible, and never happened, and highlights more than 200 game-changing, signature sports accomplishments that are the benchmark of success and history-making. The book features interesting facts and figures from the history of the sporting world from horse racing’s Triple Crown, to MLB, NFL, NBA and tennis. Fully stocked with more than 120 pages of legendary facts, What Are the Chances? engages its reader with breathtaking sports photography from the Sports Illustrated archives. By holding the full slate of rare, to almost impossible, to never happened feats, this book is sure to bolster the knowledge of even the most sports savvy kids and serve as an introduction to hallmark sports history.
·     Football Then to WOW! (August 12, 2014, $19.95, Ages 8 and up) takes kids through how football basics, players, strategy and fan experiences have evolved over the last 110 years. In bookstores in time for the start of the 2014 NFL season, readers will see how football grew from beefy leatherheads to jaw-dropping athletes, offenses that rarely passed to high-scoring machines, and players working for peanuts to showmen earning millions. Football Then to WOW! is filled with trivia, key events in football history over the last century, changes in strategic offensive and defensive systems, advancements in technology, and the growth in record-breaking single-season marks. Football Then to WOW! is the comprehensive guide to the history of football for young sports fans and readers.

Both of these books are a lot of fun to read, and Ethan and I have learned a ton about sports while reading them!  The holidays are coming up, and both of these books would be great gifts for the sports fan in your life!
