DVD review and giveaway: The Genesis Code

On Friday I received a movie to review and once Ethan spotted the DVD and saw the hockey player on the cover, he wouldn't stop asking to watch it. So Saturday night was family movie night in our home!  The movie that we received to review is called The Genesis Code. Here's a bit about it, from a press release that I received:

Kerry Wells (Kelsey Sanders), a college journalist and committed Christian with an effervescent personality, has been assigned to do a story on Blake Truman (Logan Bartholomew) the college’s newest and very popular hockey superstar. As a relationship between them begins to develop Kerry finds that Blake, who hides behind a tough and independent façade, is actually struggling through a difficult personal crisis and that he bears the cross of a secret he has kept hidden for years. Blake rebuffs Kerry's suggestion that prayer might help ease his burden; he is convinced that modern science completely disproves the Bible, especially the opening verses of Genesis. Kerry — who is herself suddenly confronted with a challenge to her faith on another front — sets out to prove that science and Genesis are not in conflict and her quest leads to a startling revelation. Could it be that what science teaches us about creation and the Story as told in Genesis are both true!

My husband and I both thought that this made for a good family movie night movie.  It's got a good story of standing up for your faith, even in the face of ridicule and other harm.  The main character, Kerry, is very strong in her faith, and knows the Bible well and is not afraid to speak up when she feels that she needs to.  As a Christian and as a scientist by profession, I really liked the other main story of the movie- that science and the Bible don't necessarily disagree.   And as a pastor's daughter, I liked the portrayal of Kerry's dad (a pastor) as a fun human being with some surprising hobbies!

The movie does come in at over two hours long, and Daniel and I thought there were definitely some areas of the movie that were too drawn out, but all in all we thought it was an enjoyable way to spend our evening.
