SCT & Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia present
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
& Other Eric Carle Favorites

(Seattle, WA) – Seattle Children’s Theatre welcomes Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia to Seattle for The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Eric Carle Favorites. Based on the beloved books by Eric Carle, with adaption, design and direction by Jim Morrow and music by Steven Naylor, this black light presentation of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Little Cloud and The Mixed-up Chameleon will engage the senses and enchant all ages with whimsical music and imaginative puppetry. Opening in SCT’s Eve Alvord Theatre Friday May 4th (with a public preview Thursday, May 3rd) The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Eric Carle Favorites runs through June 14, 2012.

On tour continuously since 1999, Mermaid Theatre’s compilations of three Eric Carle stories have generated remarkable statistics and earned considerable praise from audiences on several continents. Featuring innovative black-light puppetry and evocative original music, the fifty-minute production includes three beloved stories: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Little Cloud and The Mixed-Up Chameleon.

“Introduction to theatre absolutely needs to engage children in a dramatic way,” says SCT Artistic Director Linda Hartzell. “Through these beautiful performances toddlers will be absolutely mesmerized by theatre.”

The Very Hungry Caterpillar follows the wonderful adventures of a very tiny and very hungry caterpillar that progresses through an amazing variety of foods towards his eventual metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly. High up in a beautiful sky, Little Cloud slips away from the rest and transforms itself into various shapes of things it sees - a sheep, and airplane, a shark and more. In The Mixed-Up Chameleon, a little chameleon is bored with its life - sitting about predictably changing color all day. So it decides to embark on an adventurous trip to the zoo. Upon seeing the beautiful animals there, the little chameleon tries changing to look like each one of them.

Founded in 1972, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia ranks among North America’s most respected theatres for young audiences. The company regularly crosses the continent, and has represented Canada in Japan, Mexico, Australia, England, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Holland, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Vietnam, South Korea and Taiwan. Mermaid Theatre has earned Export Excellence awards from both the Governments of Canada and of Nova Scotia. To date, more than 2200 performances have been presented to more than 1,475,000 spectators with shows offered in Dutch, English, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and French.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Eric Carle Favorites will be presented in SCT’s Eve Alvord Theatre from May 3 through June 14, 2012.
