Review: Trend Micro SafeSync

Over the past couple of years, I've had a number of friends whose computers up and died one day, taking all sorts of documents and photos and videos with them.  Daniel and I have an external hard drive, and we try to keep up with backing things up, but we have been known to forget for extended periods of time. I worry that one day our tiny little computer will get overwhelmed with all that we ask of it, and we'll lose important things as well.

So I was happy to get the chance, thanks to BzzAgent, to try out a program from Trend Micro called SafeSync. We've used Trend Micro products for our computer in the past and have been pleased with them, but we hadn't heard about SafeSync.  Here's a bit about the program, from the Trend Micro website:

Sharing is simple

SafeSync lets you send links to your personal photos, videos, and documents using our simple and secure sharing buttons. We use sharing links, so your friends and family can easily access your digital life without clogging up their inbox. You can stay safe by removing the link at any time.

You can go mobile!

SafeSync gives you 24/7 access to your data from any web-enabled device. Using the SafeSync mobile apps for iPhone, iPad, and Android, you can upload your captured images, stream music and videos, view pictures or important documents, and easily share them all with friends!

Protect your precious memories

SafeSync keeps your files automatically backed up, secure and synchronized. All you have to do is select the folders that you want to protect and SafeSync will always keep up-to-date copies on all your enabled devices.
I love this program for a number of reasons.  First of all, it was insanely easy to set up. I just chose the folders that I wanted synced and the program went to work. Second, after setting up my folders for syncing, the program doesn't have to be told to sync up new files in that folder. It's all automatic.  So my new photos and videos and documents are backed up with no input from me.  However, if I want to change what is being synced up, that's easy too.  Third, I love that I can access my files from anywhere.  We travel a fair amount, and I do need to be able to get to my photos and document for my reviews while we're traveling, and sometimes we don't have our laptop along.  This is a problem no longer- it's all stored safely on the SafeSync site, where I can log in and access my files.

Again, you choose what to upload and sync, so if there are files that you don't feel comfortable with uploading, that's no problem. However, SafeSync uses the same transfer encryption that bank accounts do, so I'm not concerned about the safety and privacy of the files that I upload.

SafeSync is available with three different file size options, either 20, 50 or 100 GB.  For more information about SafeSync, visit this website.

Disclosure: Thanks to BzzAgent and TrendMicro, I received a SafeSync account to review for myself. I was not compensated in any other way and all opinions posted here are mine and mine alone.
