Review: Simple Steps Canning Guide

One of my most vivid memories from childhood is of watching my normally not-terribly-fond-of-the-kitchen mother, in the kitchen, surrounded by fruit and jars and all her canning supplies. I remember the smells of the fruit and the way that the pretty finished jars looked all lined up in our cupboards.  Like my mother, I'm not exactly a huge fan of the kitchen, but as I spend more time home with my kids, I've become interested in making more things myself.  Since I have so many memories of my mom canning and of the yummy canned fruits, this year's goal is for me to try it myself!

To that end, I attended an introduction to canning class and bought the Ball Blue Book Guide to Canning, but I've still been nervous about getting started. Then I received the chance to review a manual called Simple Steps Canning Guide. I'm so happy to have this guide on hand!  Here's a bit about the guide, from its website:

I love this idea of the quizzes- when I'm making something that my family and friends will consume, I want to be sure I didn't miss anything important, and the quizzes make me slow down and read carefully!

Topics in the book include food science, choosing food to can, equipment needs and selection, preparing for canning day, actually doing the canning, and what to do after the food is canned. In addition to all this information, each chapter has links to articles for more information on the introduced topics.

I love this guide and I feel that it's given me some much needed information for my upcoming canning sessions.
