Review: Picnic Backpack from RedEnvelope

A little while ago I wrote a post about RedEnvelope and my selection process for a Father's Day gift for Daniel. You can visit this link for that post- and to enter the $50 Red Envelope gift certificate giveaway that I have going on right now!

After browsing the site and falling in love with all the great gift ideas, I decided to get the Picnic Backpack. Here's a bit about it, from the product website:
Hosting a family picnic is as simple as filling our backpack with the family's favorite foods. The canvas pack is already loaded up with melamine plates, goblets, flatware and napkins for four, plus a bread knife, wooden cutting board, salt and pepper shakers and a sommelier's corkscrew. It even has a detachable wine cooler and sable-gray felt blanket. Exclusively from RedEnvelope.
  • padded shoulder straps for comfort
  • insulated main compartment keeps food cold
  • 18" x 7" x 16"H
I am so glad we ended up with this item! I was too excited to wait until Father's Day to give this to Daniel, so it was an early gift for him. And the day after it arrived, we packed it full of food and headed to Seattle Center for a family picnic!

Since we all had different drink requests, we weren't taking along a large bottle of anything, so I detached the wine cooler from the side before we headed out. The removal (and reattachment later) was simple, just a matter of putting the straps through the buckles.  The cooler pocket was a nice size for all of the food that we were taking along for our lunch picnic. I don't think it would have fit much more than we took along, but it worked well for us.

Daniel said that the straps made it very comfortable to carry the backpack, even when it was full of our food and all the items that are stored inside it.  We both loved how organized it all is, with everything  neatly strapped inside in its own location. It was great to have the blanket stored on the side. It was easy to remove for eating, made for a comfortable seat, and was easy to store away again when we were done. The blanket is backed with a vinyl backing, so if you're on slightly damp ground, your rear ends will stay dry.

The plates and glasses are sturdy and durable, nothing that will easily break in transit or with use. The inclusion of real silverware, cloth napkins, the bread cutting board and knife and all the other accessories made our simple picnic lunch feel like a special occasion! The backpack itself is also very nicely constructed. Everything is definitely made to last. I think we're going to be picnicking in style for many years to come!

Disclosure: I received this item to review for myself, thanks to RedEnvelope. I also received a gift certificate to give away to one of you. I was not compensated in any other way and all opinions posted here are mine and mine alone.
