Congrats to my winner: Living Hip TodayBack in the year 2000, I was living a much different life than I am today- rather than being a stay-at-home mom in Seattle, I was working as a missionary in Ukraine. One of the projects that I remember the most working on during my time in Ukraine was when I worked with Campus Crusade for Christ on showings of the Jesus film. It was a wonderful evangelical tool, and one I was blessed to be a small part of. So, when I heard about a new movie called Magdalena: Through Her Eyes that expands on the original Jesus film to speak more directly to women, I was very interested to do a review. Here's a bit about the movie, from its website:
The film, Magdalena: Through Her Eyes, is the true story of Jesus seen through the eyes of Mary Magdalene- a story of tenderness, freedom and purpose. "Magdalena" reveals what can happen when women refuse to live in defeat and choose to discover their real value.
For the first time, this remarkable film- created by women for women- gives a voice to one of the most complex and often misunderstood women of our past. Through Mary Magdalene's eyes, we experience much more than just her own transformation by Jesus' redemptive love.
Magdalena: Through Her Eyes, combines footage from the original Jesus film with new footage showing Mary Magdalene as she is healed by Jesus and follows him on his ministry, with special focus on the stories of women whose lives were changed by Jesus. My husband watched this movie with me and had no idea that he was watching essentially two different movies brought together- and when I told him he was surprised! The makers of Magdalena did a great job of matching up original locations and the look of the Jesus film.
As for the movie itself, it is biblically sound and I think it serves as both a wonderful evangelism tool and a great preparation for Easter for a Christian family- or as an anytime reminder of Jesus' life and message for us. The plot of Magdalena starts at the beginning of the Bible to show the fall of man and continues through the Old Testament to show the need for Jesus' coming and salvation through him, then follows Jesus through his birth, early life, ministry, crucifixion and resurrection. All the information and stories are simply presented in easy-to-follow language, with great scenes that bring the stories and message to life. Brought together, all the elements of this movie present a wonderful message of how much Jesus' love and salvation is for each and every one of us, no matter how fallen or unlovable we believe we are.
The DVD that I reviewed has two different versions of the film, both a full-length version (82 minutes) as well as a 1-hour edition and some extras, like behind-the-scenes glimpses of how the film was made. There are also several language options, so you can watch the movie in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French.
