My 3 1/2-year-old son, Ethan, has recently developed a gigantic obsession with all things related to outer space and rockets. So we were excited to have the chance to watch a brand-new web series called Space Race. Here's a bit about Space Race:
Space Race (www.spaceracekids.com) launched as an animated web series focusing on space education, space travel and racing, with the goal of teaching children about space and the solar system. Space Race features eight characters, each in spaceship form, as they race through space, merging unique comic relief with breathtaking excitement and adventure.
So far, four episodes of Space Race are available online. Each one is short, just about four minutes long. But the makers of this show have fit a lot of information into the episodes! Each one introduces a character, as well as their associated space feature or planet. So far we've learned about Earth, the Moon, Space Stations and Mars. I found the episodes to be educational and graphically appealing, and my son thought they were lots of fun!
To help us get even more excited about Space Race, we were sent a great 18x 24 poster of the Sun and all the planets (and yes, it includes Pluto). Ethan's loving it- it's up near his bed now, and he's been spending lots of time studying all the planets. I think both the poster and the show are a great way to get kids excited about learning about the solar system! In addition to the web episodes, the site has games, flash cards, coloring sheets, worksheets, e-cards and more.
