For the first month or so that I was running this blog, I was manually counting comments to determine winners. Which was pretty time-consuming, even back when I only had a handful of entries per contest. Thankfully I discovered how to have my comments manually numbered before things started getting really busy around here!
If you are using Blogger and want your comments numbered, visit this wonderful tutorial over at 1st Floor Flat The Computery to learn how. I'm a scientist, not a programmer, but the instructions are simple and easy to follow and even someone like me had no problem getting them to work.
