Review: Yourpicturebook.com (and holiday gift guide, part 2!)

Thanks to my involvement at the Product Review Place, I had the opportunity to receive and review a really wonderful book from yourpicturebook.com.

When I first chatted with the representative from yourpicturebook.com, I was intrigued by the idea behind their books. We're all familiar with the books and CDs that put our kids' names into the story or songs, right? Well, this site takes the idea one step forward, by taking a photo of your child and putting it on every page in the story!

So, after I decided that I wanted to review the Noah's Ark book (they also offer a counting book and Moon Dirt Milkshake, a book about friendship) my task was to get a picture of my two-year-old. Honestly, that was the hardest part of the whole process! After chasing him around for 15 minutes, I narrowed my options down to two pictures and emailed both of them off to yourpicturebook.com, along with the spelling of my son's name, and the dedication that I wanted on the first page.

When the package came in the mail, I was so excited- and sad that it arrived when Ethan was napping, I couldn't wait to show it to him! The book was a very nice hardcover book, and there my cutie was on every page, along with his name on the front and the dedication inside the front cover! And the graphic artists really know their stuff, his appearance in the story looked really natural. Can you spot him in the picture? He's right behind the hippopotamus.

(Sorry for the glare on the giraffe's face- weird lighting in my kitchen! )

(Again, sorry for the glare. Look how cute my son looks, waiting for the animals to get on the ark!)

Beyond the cute picture, I really like the way that the Noah's Ark story was told in this book. God and faith are very important in our family, and this book reinforces messages that we're trying to teach our kids.

Ethan loves to look through his book and see all the animals and look for himself on each page. We've only had the book a few days and it's already a household favorite!

You can get your own personalized book at yourpicturebook.com for $34.95. The site also has other great options for gifts with your/your kid's picture, including coloring books, NFL posters (a great gift for the man in your life!), and DVDs.

We will be having a giveaway soon, so one of you will be able to win your own personalized book. Stay tuned to this site for details!

Do you know about Plan Toys?

Whenever I visit a toy store (which is way more often that I should, given the number of toys that my kids already own!) I am irresistibly drawn to one particular section of the store. This is true no matter what toy store I'm in- I always gravitate towards the section with all the cool wooden toys. They just seem so wholesome and fun- I can't resist going over and looking at them and dreaming of owning them all!

These wonderful wooden toys? They're made by PlanToys, a company that has decided to make it its goal to prove that a company can make toys that are fun and educational, while also sticking to a path of environmental and social responsibility. All the toys are made from rubberwood from non-latex-producing rubber trees. They also use a glue that is called E-zero glue in place of traditional glue. The toys are dyed with water-based, non-toxic colors and printed with soy or water-based ink. Considering how often my kids end up chewing on their toys, I'm glad to know that PlanToys is so committed to standards meant to protect children. PlanToys is also committed to green manufacturing, so the toys are safer for the environment as well.

Just a few of the great toys from PlanToys (top to bottom) the crane, the Terrace Dollhouse, and the caterpillar)

All the safety issues aside, PlanToys are just darned cute and make me want to be a kid again. They have a huge assortment of toys, there's something for every interest, age and developmental category. And PlanToys are great for development and education- I know I always feel better when I think my kids are learning while they play.

PlanToys is on Facebook! Go become a fan! And go browse their catalog to see all the great toys they have available. You can search the toys by category, age or child development level to find something that's perfect for the kid in your life.

Stay tuned to this website for an upcoming review and giveaway!

Holiday gift ideas!

I know- it seems like summer was just yesterday and it's hard to believe the holidays are about to be upon us, but it's true! When I was shopping the other day, one store was already playing Christmas music! That's a little much for me, but, it is a good time to start gathering ideas for Christmas gifts for your little ones. As I come across things that I think are great ideas, I'm going to share them with you here.

Today's suggestion- Sorrisi Decor makes the most adorable pillows for kids. These pillows are ridiculously cute at first glance, but they hold a secret that makes them even better- a secret pocket! This pocket can be used for playing tooth fairy- holding the tooth at first and then the money that the tooth fairy leaves behind. If you have younger or older kids, who aren't currently being visited by the tooth fairy, this pocket would be perfect for hiding little gifts or notes from Mom and Dad. Pillows can be purchased with or without a child's name embroidered on them. Visit the site to see the full range of pillows offered- there's something for everyone.

Not only does this company have a cute and fun product, they have a wonderful mission. From their website (emphasis mine):

Sorrisi Décor has partnered with Medical Teams International, a Christian global health organization, to identify the regions with the greatest degree of need with the fewest resources, and we will be giving a full 50% of the Sorrisi profits to seeing teams of dental professionals sent to these areas to address their current most desperate needs. The current areas of focus are:
Liberia – After 14 years of intermittent civil war lasting until 2003, this country is slowly recovering from widespread human suffering. Basic services have been totally disrupted and health services severely damaged. With 3.5 million people, there are 3 licensed dentists, leaving many people to suffer and sometimes die from avoidable dental abscesses and extreme infections. The mission? Visiting teams will establish a circuit of 6-8 dental clinics in the outlying areas to provide extractions, fillings and cleanings, along with oral hygiene instruction to all patients. A concentrated effort will be made to train at least one person in each community who can then continue with the dental education efforts once the team has gone.
Mali – Ranked among the poorest countries in the world, Mali's desperate poverty produces alarming health statistics. With Malians suffering from severe food shortages and famine, 1 out of every 4 children never reach his/her fifth birthday. With 84 dentists serving a population of over 12 million, access to dental care for most rural Malians is non-existent. The mission? To provide very poor, rural communities with dental care and preventive dental hygiene education to alleviate suffering and help reduce the related incidence of poor health.

So, to recap, this is a cute, fun, practical pillow that has a great mission behind it. Consider buying one of these pillows for your child or grandchild- your child will love you and you will be helping another mother somewhere else around the world. What could be better than that?

Pillows start at $49.95 and can be purchased on the Sorrisi Decor website.

Review: Habitwise

Pop quiz- What's the common theme of pretty much every diet in existence, and one of the most common suugestions for healthier living? Anyone?  That's right- drinking your daily USDA suggested intake of water.  It's such a simple concept, but so hard to follow through on. Life is busy, and who has time to keep track of how many glasses of water they drink! Add busyness plus forgetfulness, and you get a woman who doesn't always get her 12 8-ounce servings of water in each day!

So I was pleased when I was sent a fun product that helps with this problem- Habitwise's Get Wet for Women.

This is such a simple idea, but so brilliant at the same time! The kit comes with 16 bracelets. Every day you put on your chosen number of the pretty blue bracelets, with each one representing an 8-ounce serving of water.  As you drink a serving of water, just move the bracelet to the other arm or take it off completely- your reminder to keep drinking is always right there in plain sight!  The kit also contains a small booklet with information on water consumption and recommended daily intakes of water.

I like that the bracelets are 1) pretty- I need pretty accessories, 2) a great reminder that's right there for me to see, and 3) not at all bulky. I'm holding a baby or a toddler or both all day, and I can't have jewelry getting in my way. These bracelets didn't interfere with anything I needed to do and looked really nice with my outfits. I liked using these bracelets- it was nice to have the reminder to keep drinking my water- especially since I'm a nursing mom and need to be sure to get that water in for my sake and my daughter's sake!

Habitwise also has other great kits for weight loss for women and tracking physical activity/eating for kids. They also have weight loss/water consumption kits for men, with small tokens to be used in place of bracelets.

So, if you need to be reminded of your water intake each day, or if you want to get on track with healthier eating habits, go check the Habitwise kits out!

Review: Sprout Baby Food

When my son was born, I, like every other mom I know, had every intention of making all of my son's food. Then he actually got to the age for eating solid food and reality set in. It just simply did not work for us. My son was a horribly picky eater, and would completely reject foods that I made, leaving me to try to find space in my small freezer for storing all the rejected food for reintroduction later.  Also, there were the small matters that I am a terrible cook, and was also a working mom with too much on my to-do list.

I eventually just accepted that making my own baby food was not a good option for my son and I, and I started buying baby food at the stores. There are several good lines out there that I really liked, but they do tend to be fairly expensive and the stores that I shopped at didn't always carry a wide variety of organic baby foods.

I wish that Sprout Foods Organic Baby Food had been around several years ago- maybe my son would be a better eater now if he hadn't been traumatized by my poor efforts at making his food! Sprout Foods Organic Baby Food was co-founded  by executive chef Tyler Florence. With that kind of background, you know it's going to be good!

Thanks to my involvement at the Product Review Place, I was sent six pouches of the organic baby food to review. First off, I really like that the food came in pouches instead of jars or boxes, according to the Sprout Baby website, this means less fossil fuel use in manufacture and transport than traditional glass jars, and the pouches take up less space in the garbage when you throw them out. The pouches are resealable, and I found them very easy to serve food from.

We received foods in the following flavors: roasted bananas; sweet peas; baked sweet potato (all from the stage 1 foods); baked sweet potatoes and white beans; peach rice pudding; and summer squash, yukon gold potatoes and parmesan (from the stage 2). My baby daughter is not eating food yet (despite her attempts at telepathic messages begging for solid food), so I tested these out on my picky eater toddler.

Ethan needed some warming up to the summer squash, yukon gold potatoes and parmesan, but he tends to take his time liking anything, and once he'd had a few bites he was convinced. The peach rice pudding was a hit right off, he couldn't shovel it in his mouth fast enough, so he made me feed it to him instead! I can't wait to serve the stage 1 foods to Vivian next month- I think she'll love them!

So, we're converts to the Sprout Foods Organic Baby Food line in our house now- I'm going to stock up before Vivian starts eating solids next month! Now, how to get Tyler Florence to make food for me...You can buy Sprout Foods Organic Baby Food online at this site, or at HEB or Publix stores (with more stores coming soon). The prices are very reasonable, with a 12-pack of stage 1 or stage 2 foods only costing $16.65, which is very comparable if not cheaper than many other organic baby foods. You can buy either an assorted 12-pack, or 12 pouches of one particular food.  Sprout Baby, where the food can be purchased, also has some great-looking mom and baby care items.

Go check it out!

Disclaimer: I was sent samples of this baby food so that I could write this review from personal experience.  I was not compensated in any other way and all opinions presented here are mine and mine alone.

I like the Red Dots holiday card. PS: I put up a giveaway roundup post on my blog where you can list your giveaway for all my readers to see! http://bonggafinds.blogspot.com/2009/09/list-your-giveaways-here.html

In the past two years, pretty much everyone I know has had at least one child, so our mailbox has been constantly full of birth announcements and birthday party invitations.  These have fallen into one of two categories- either clearly very expensive, or handwritten on some sort of generic card. I have to admit, I personally spent a lot of money on birth announcements for each of my kids- there are very few affordable sites and we have big families and lots of friends to send announcements to!   And do you know the sad truth about all these invitations and annoucements? After I look at them and get the relevant information, I throw them straight into the recycling bin!

I would have loved to know about the Print My Baby website, because it offers a great, affordable alternative to the expensive invites/announcements, while still looking very professional.  I was sent a sample card to look at in person and was very impressed with the quality. The invitation was printed on nice cardstock paper, with pretty graphics and nice lettering.

Print My Baby has Baby Shower Invitations, Birth Announcements, Birthday Party Invitations, Baptism Invitations and Holiday Cards for all your partying needs.  And these nice looking cards? $1.00 a piece.  If you've priced these lately, you'll know that most sites sell their invites and announcements for upwards of $2.50-$3 per card.

Print My Baby also offers a print-it-yourself option, where you input the relevant information and Print My Baby will send you a file within 24 hours with the prints in three different sizes as well as a high-resolution image for you to size as you want. This is another really affordable option, just $9.99 for the file.

So, if you have a party or birth coming up, check out this site for all your invitation and announcement needs.

Print My Baby is offering 10 free printed cards to one of my lucky readers! (US mailing addresses only)

Mandatory entry:
1) Go visit the Print My Baby site and let me know what design you like best.

Extra entries (please leave a separate comment for each, mandatory entry must be done first for these to count):
1) Follow my blog
2) Put my button on your blog- let me know where to find it!
3) Blog about this giveaway (3 extra entries- please leave 3 separate comments).

Giveaway will end at 9 PM on October 24, 2009.  I'll choose a winner with random.org and you will have 48 hours to respond to my email.  Good luck!

Review: Toddler Bistro Box

My two-year-old son, Ethan is not a good eater.  At all.  He had some problems with being overly sensitive to food textures and excessive gagging when he was a baby, and this has left him pretty much totally disinterested in food.  Unfortunately, this dislike of food has resulted in him being in the 1st percentile for height and weight. Which means that the totally normal toddler stages that he's entering now, the ones where eating is a power struggle and food preferences start to manifest themselves, well, it's especially stressful for me.

The other thing that complicates this whole feeding thing is that I have been overweight for my entire life and have been trying to diet since my late adolescence. So I am pretty much clueless as to ideas for what to feed my underweight, picky-eater child.

So I was so excited to find out about the Baby Bistro Brands  Toddler Bistro Box and REALLY excited when they sent me one to review here.  The Toddler Bistro Box and the Baby Bistro Box are the invention of 4-generations of a family- invented to help a new mom with her questions about feeding her baby. The information in the box is primarily from Christina, a nutritionist and educator.

I love that everything comes in a cute little recipe box- it's very handy and will be easy to store close at hand in my cupboard. The box has sections in it, like any recipe box, with cards that are easy to remove for reading, taking notes or bringing with you to the store.  The Toddler Bistro Box isn't just a collection of recipes, it's a full education on how to feed your child in a healthy way.

As you can see from the menu above, the Toddler Box covers a huge variety of topics, with lots of information in each section.  Things I especially liked:
  •  Starters: Tips on palate preferencess, picky eaters, toddler tasting tricks and appropriate serving sizes.
  • First course: allergy information, tips on drinks, keeping kids safe from food-borne disease, choking checks and meats to avoid.
  • Second course: information on lead, pesticides and plastic wraps.
  • Entrees: I love the recipes and that they are divided up by meal and by age, with recipes for 1-2 and 2-3 year olds.  I also REALLY like the information on nutrient needs by weight, since my son is far below the typical weight for a 2-year-old and needs different nutrition than another kid his same age. And I love the shopping tips in this section.
  • A la carte: Great information about nutrients (carbs, fiber, etc.) This section also has great information on vegan sources of nutrients.
  • Extras: Tips for eating out, TV time, and what to do if your kid is over or underweight.
  • Entertainment: This section has some really fun ideas for activities around the home, again divided up by age.
  • Desserts: Fun family time ideas and suggestions for further reading.
There's a lot of information in this box and I think it might take me a while before I can remember exactly where all the information I most need can be found, but I look forward to spending time going through and learning and coming up with some ideas for my family. I already have been passing on lots of tidbits of information to my husband- like thinking weekly in terms of making sure Ethan gets the right nutrition (especially vegetables and such), rather than daily, since toddlers are so very unpredictable. Mealtime is without a doubt the most frustrating time of our day, but this box is going to go a long way toward fixing that problem!

Enter my giveaway to win a Baby or Toddler Bistro Box for yourself!

Review: Harry Connick Jr album- Your Songs

Thanks to my involvement with the One2One Network, I had the opportunity to receive and review Harry Connick Jr's new album, Your Songs.  I've loved his music for years- ever since I first heard his music as the soundtrack to When Harry Met Sally.  But, even though I've always liked his songs, I've never actually owned one of his albums, so was excited to get to review this one.

This is a great album of classic songs that everyone knows and loves.  Songs on this album are: All The Way, Just the Way You Are, Can't help Falling In Love With You, And I Love Her, Close to You, Besame Mucho, The Way You Look Tonight, First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Your Song, Some Enchanted Evening, And I Love You So, Who Can I Turn To?, Smile, and Mona Lisa.

I really enjoyed the arrangements of these songs- it was a nice CD to have on in the background while I went about my day, chasing the kids, trying to get my son to eat, changing lots of diapers.  The songs made me feel like I was living in some sort of movie with a great soundtrack- and I kept finding myself smiling and singing along.  My favorite song off the album is "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." We used this song on the DVD we made of the first year of my son's life, so whenever I hear it, I think of all those fun memories from his babyhood- makes it easier to deal with the terrible twos when I'm thinking fondly of him! :)

I highly recommend this album for lovers of Harry Connick Jr. and lovers of these classic songs.  It's a great addition to any music collection.

The album is now on sale in stores and online. Here's a link to the Amazon page where the album is for sale.

Review: Smartmom Teething Bling

I'm a stay-at-home mom of two small kids, a 2-year-old and a 3-month-old. Our lives mainly consist of hanging out at home, walking to the grocery store, and spending a ridiculous amount of time at the nearby Children's Museum.  Since I don't really go anywhere special, and since my outfits are likely to be covered in baby spitup or toddler snot at any given time, I tend to wear the "mom uniform" of jeans and a casual shirt.

Lately though, I've been wanting to spruce up my outfits a bit and have started trying to accessorize better. And this mainly means wearing some bigger necklaces, things that add to my boring solid colored shirts. Unfortunately, as mentioned, I have a toddler and a newborn, and both are fascinated with grabbing anything that Mommy is wearing around her neck.

Enter Teething Bling. I'd heard about these necklaces before, so emailed the company to see if I could do a review. They kindly sent me their Onyx Donut Shaped Pendant.

The Teething Bling necklaces are nice, solid pieces made of food-safe, federally-approved, phthalate-free silicone. The pendant hangs on a black cord with a breakaway clasp-so your toddler can't choke you when he or she decides to try to pull off mommy's necklace and if your infant pulls too hard while chewing on your necklace, you'll be fine.

I really liked the necklace- it's simple, but stylish, especially this year when the big, chunky pieces are in style.  And I love the concept of having something for my baby to chew on while she's working on growing her teeth and having it right around my neck- I can never find the teething ring in the depths of my diaper bag.

My toddler also thought the necklace was great fun and spent a happy 15 minutes during dinner last night poking it and smashing it and making it bounce off the table.  We like to go out to eat as a family, and entertaining the toddler is always our major challenge, so this is a handy thing to have for entertaining him!

I think this is going to be a great necklace for all of us- stylish for me, a nice teething ring for my daughter and entertainment for my son.

The only (very minor) thing that I don't like about this necklace is that the silicone material picks up a little bit of fuzz and dust, so I'll definitely need to wipe it off or wash it off before my daughter uses it for teething. But that's probably a good idea anyway, and certainly not a major issue.

You can buy the Teething Bling necklaces in a huge variety of colors and patterns at Smart Mom Jewelry. In addition to the donut pendants, they have keychains and bangles and some heart-shaped pendants. You can also get some very nice gift sets on the site. The website also has a list of retailers where you can buy the necklaces.

The donut pendants, like the one I reviewed, sell for $19.10. Right now the pretty Moonstone pendant is on sale for only $9.50, and the coordinating Moonstone bangle is only $6.30, so if you're wanting to try this jewelry out, that might be a great place to start!

Review: StrollAway

There are many, many wonderful things about living in the city. We're close to museums and parks. We can hop on the bus or the monorail and be in the heart of downtown in less than 10 minutes. No dealing with traffic or expensive downtown parking. We can walk to baseball games and soccer games and the waterfront. There's always something fun and exciting going on nearby.

I love living in the city. I moved here when Daniel and I got engaged and for the first time in my life I felt like I had really truly found my place. Fortunately, Daniel loves it too, so we were both happy to settle into life in our 900-square-foot condo on the edge of downtown Seattle. And then we had a baby. And stuff started piling up and we spent an inordinately large amount of time rearranging closets to fit in one more thing. There isn't a single piece of furniture in our house that doesn't have something else hidden behind it or in it or underneath it. In the city you gotta do what you gotta do.

And then we had a second child and suddenly had even more stuff. The most difficult of the new stuff to deal with was the large double stroller. The one that doesn't stand upright, so had to be stored lying down and leaning against a wall (disclaimer: I LOVE my double stroller, it's just a pain to store). We also had held onto our single stroller for the times when we only had one kid with us or just needed a single stroller. Here's how we dealt with the single stroller storage issue:

Yes, that's our guestroom shower that we are storing the stroller in. Along with the infant bathtub and the as-yet unused toddler potty.

The double stroller just kept being a pain and taking up space until I heard about the StrollAway storage system. I was totally intrigued and emailed the company and asked if I could do a review and they kindly agreed. And it arrived and I hung up the stroller and practically heard angels singing a chorus of hallelujahs. We had a solution!

I love love love this storage idea. It just hangs over the back of the door, no installation or screwing in needed. The StrollAway is designed to fit on different size doors and has a removable spacer in it if your door is a little thicker than usual. If your stroller is large, you will need to find a door that has space behind it. For us, due to the layout of our condo, we were pretty much limited to hanging it either on our front door or our bedroom door, but it would have worked fine for us to use either. When you're not using the StrollAway, the arms fold flush to the door, so it's out of the way. The StrollAway is very sturdy, made of steel, so it can easily hold the weight of your stroller. It's designed to fit most stroller models.

The StrollAway on the back of our bedroom door. With our cat Jenny lurking in the bottom right-hand corner of the second photo. As you can see, the stroller hangs nicely there and still leaves us space to walk past to our bathroom, even when the door isn't shut all the way.

I am only a little over 5 feet tall, but have had no problem lifting my double stroller up to hang it on the hooks. The hooks are nice and thick and easy to catch with the stroller bar. It's easy to get the stroller down too- just lift and we're on our way. This is an especially great product for those of us living in small spaces, but would be wonderful for anyone who just wants to put the stroller out of the way, like grandparents who only use their strollers on occasion, or for those who are hanging on to a single stroller that is rarely used. Just hang it up and it's out of the way!

The MetroTots website has a list of places where you can buy the StrollAway. I also found it on Amazon.com. and BabiesRUs.com. It retails for $40, a small price to pay for getting your floorspace back!

Review: Earth Baby Baby Lotion

Thanks to my involvement at the Product Review Place, I had the opportunity to test out some wonderful baby lotion.  Vivian (my 3-month-old) has had problems with dry skin pretty much since birth. She went through a bad baby acne phase, followed by a weird dry skin phase, and still suffers from eczema on her arms and legs. So I have been using all sorts of lotions on her to try to help the dryness.

I was excited to get to try a baby lotion from Earth Baby. When the box arrived, I opened it to find a nice bottle of lotion with a cute monkey on the front.  Which made me smile- you can't beat a cute picture like that! I was pleasantly surprised by the smell of the lotion when I opened the bottle to sniff it. The fragrance is light, not at all overpowering, perfect for a baby.

The lotion is made of a mixture of cocoa butter and essential oils of honey, chamomile and vanilla. It contains  90% certified organic ingredients, no phthalates or dyes or mineral oil.  That's nice when you're putting it on your newborn's sensitive skin.

I've been using this lotion on Vivian for about a week now, and I am definitely noticing a difference in the severity of her skin's dryness- it's really helping!

You can buy this lotion on the Earth Baby website. It sells for $16.50 for a 6 fl oz bottle. Earth Baby also carries other products like moisturizing wipes, shampoo and sunscreen, to name a few.

Review and Giveaway: Mabel's Labels-CLOSED

Congrats to Michelle- random.org picked #41 and you were comment #41!

As I mentioned in my last review, I am a type A personality. I love things to be organized and orderly.  And I really love to label things. Is there a more beautiful sight than a cupboard with everything lined up and neatly labeled and put in order?

So, given my love of organization and labeling, I was so excited to have the chance to review a set of labels from Mabel's Labels, thanks to my involvement with the Product Review Place. I was sent the Ultimate Back to School Combo pack, which consists of 50 Tag-Mates, 40 Skinny-Minis, 16 Shoe Labels and 2 Teeny Tags. This combo pack is a special limited-time combo, only on sale until September 25, for $39.

I was really pleased with the quality of the labels I received- they are nicely made and are attractive and sturdy. The Tag-Mates are meant for labeling kids' clothing and adhere to clothing care tags with no ironing or sewing.  Great for those jackets that kids leave behind on the school bus and playground.  The Skinny-Minis are fabulous for labeling school supplies, dishes and sippy cups!  I had stuck them on Ethan's sippy cups within 30 seconds of opening the package! The labels are dishwasher safe, which means there's no relabeling of your dishes every day for daycare or school- just apply and it stays put.  The shoe labels are exactly what they sound like- labels that go inside your kids' shoes.  I so wish we had had these when Ethan was attending daycare- we had to write his name inside all his shoes with a permanent marker, which was awkward and difficult to see.  The daycare workers would have loved these big, bright stickers!

Not only are the labels useful, but they're cute. They come in a variety of colors, so you can pick what best suits your child's personality. And, in addition to your kid's name, the labels have an icon on them. I picked an airplane for Ethan's labels, since he loves airplanes.

In addition to the labels I reviewed, Mabel's Labels has lots of other items like "my 411 wristbands", which are disposable wristbands customized to include a child's name, parent's name, address and allergy information, "allergy alert", labels which can be applied to things like food containers and travel gear to remind people of a child's allergies and "bag tags", metal tags which are great for school bags and sporting equipment.  And, they also make products which are great for adults, including the "neak freak combo", which has 50 bin labels, 16 canister labels and 56 spice labels. Seriously, people, I can hardly type that without exclamation points. It's seriously going to the top of my Christmas wish list.

I'm also happy to have had the chance to review these labels because Mabel's Labels is a company that was started by moms and is a company from Canada. As a mom to two dual citizens and the wife of a Canadian, I'm always happy to support Canadian companies!

One of you will get to test out a set of Skinny-Minis for yourself! Giveaway is open to US/Canadian mailing addresses only.

Review: Busy Babe

I am a type A personality. Possibly a type A+ personality. Which means that having two small children is kind of stressful for me, since I like everything to be organized and orderly.  My personality was particularly tested in the first few months of my kids' lives, when chaos reigned supreme in our house.

Oh, how I wish I had known about the Busy Babe Daily Planner for Mom and Baby then.  Seriously, this would have made my life so much easier.  This fabulous organizer is designed to take the place of the monthly calendar, the to-do list(or lists) lying around your house, and the feeding charts keeping track of what baby is eating.

Busy Babe organizers come in two types, either customized with your baby's picture and birth info on the cover (with three choices for covers), or a standard 6-month planner. The customized planner not only has your baby's picture on it, but the pages for the six-month daily calendar inside are dated. Which, if you've ever had a baby, you will know is so useful, because it's so easy to lose track of what day it is when you're a new mom!

Thanks to my involvement with the Product Review Place, I had the chance to review the standard 6-month planner and was totally excited by it.  The planner is spiral bound, which makes it really easy to write in, even while balancing the planner on one side while feeding the baby with the other.  I love lists and organizers and all things organization, and this had it all. The front has a section for important contacts, where you can write down that ultra-important pediatrician (and lots of other) phone numbers so that they're close at hand during those 1 AM worry sessions.  After that, there are separate sections for months 1-6.  Each of these has great sections for a to do list (including a section for prioritizing! the to-do list! Seriously! I love it!!!), appointments, dinner ideas, feeding tracker, sleep tracker and pattern (diaper, behavior, etc.) tracker.  Also, the pages have a section for "today's buzz" which is great for making notes on what cute things the baby did that day. I've had two kids in two years, and I can tell you that you SO quickly forget all the little things and when exactly they happened, so having a place to jot them down is great!

The pages introducing each month also have great info including a place to record baby gifts, ideas for packing for baby, packing for mom, starting solids, losing that baby weight!, and childproofing the home. Great info to have at hand.

There is also a section on baby's health, including pages to tear out and take with you to doctors' appointments, so you can remember all those questions that you mean to ask the doctor but forget when you're actually in the office. Other sections include a place for you to leave information for babysitters and to record notes and ideas for mommy time!

The customized planner sells for $29.95 and the standard 6-month planner sells for just $19.95. This is a great price to stay this organized. This planner is now on my list of great ideas for baby shower presents- go check it out for yourself!

Disclaimer: I was sent this product to review, but all opinions presented here are mine and mine alone.

Review and Giveaway: Slimperfect swimwear!- CLOSED

Winner was chosen by random.org- #12. Comment #12 is:

September 16, 2009 7:26 AM

I'm emailing you now! Congrats!

I know, it's the end of September, so a slightly strange time to be doing a swimwear review and giveaway, but it'll be a good thing for you all! Keep reading to find out why.

Since I hit my mid-teenage years, I've been a fairly curvy woman.  Particularly my top half.  This situation has only been made worse by having two children.  Buying bathing suits was challenging even pre-kids, even when I was 30 pounds thinner, as I tried to find suits that looked nice and that kept me decently covered.  Now that I've got baby weight and stretch marks and such to deal with, swimsuit shopping is nearly impossible.  The other challenge I have had is finding a suit that can stand up to a mom's active life- we can't have any of those flimsy suits with tie on tops- that's just not going to work!

Then I found out about the SlimPerfect swimsuits and was very intrigued. SlimPerfect makes suits that are versatile and can be worn at the pool, gym or beach. I love multipurpose items!  And they're cute too!

The nice people at SlimPerfect sent me a gift certificate to choose some swim items to review. Thanks to the GREAT sale they have going on right now, I was able to get several pieces to mix and match.

I got the tankini top, which I especially liked (no, this isn't me in the photos) since I'm not terribly happy with my mid-section (two pregnancies and two c-sections in 2 years does not leave your midsection in good shape!).  The tankini is cute, with nice, substantial straps, removable gel-filled bra cups, and a tummy tamer (my favorite part).  Thanks to the great sale, I was able to get tankini tops in several colors.

To go with the tankini tops, I also ordered a  SlimSkort. I liked the idea of having my thighs covered (can't blame that on the kids, but the cake I ate while pregnant with the kids).  The skort has a nice cute black skirt with bike short style shorts underneath. And it has great tummy control! So necessary with a post c-section tummy!

I was so excited to try on my new swimwear when it arrived, and I was not disappointed! The tummy tamer in both the top and bottom worked well, I looked so much thinner that I hated to take it off and put back on my regular clothes. I felt comfortable and well-covered in the both the top and bottom, but not in a restrictive way.  I will definitely still be able to chase the kids in this, but now I wont be worrying about my bosoms falling out of my top while I run around. The gel-filled cups did have to come out of my top immediately, but that was easy. I can see that those would be great if you need a little help up top.  I can hardly wait to take my swimsuit to a pool to test it out! We're planning a trip to the local indoor waterpark later this year and I can hardly wait to wear the suits then!
SlimPerfect carries mix and match pieces, like the tankini and the slimskort, as well as bikini tops and slimskirts. They also have nice one-piece slimdresses which are also really cute.  And right now, prices on the items are great, as low as $17.90 (for the bikini top).  Go check out their sale!

One of you will get to try out some of these too! SlimPerfect is offering one of you a $50 gift certificate! This will buy you a nice new swimsuit, so go enter! (You will need to pay shipping and handling on the items you buy, but it's not at all expensive). Giveaway open to US/Canadian mailing addresses only. I'll take entries until 9 PM PST on October 17, 2009. Winner will be chosen by random.org and will have 48 hours to respond to my email.

To enter:
1) Go visit SlimPerfect and come back and leave me a comment letting me know what you like best. Be sure to include your email address in your comment unless it's visible in your profile.

Review: Sweet Bitty Bows

My son takes after me in many ways, one of those being his lack of hair.  I was a bald baby and my mom had to tape bows to my head so that people would know I was a girl. Ethan didn't have much hair until he was over a year old, and didn't need his first hair cut until last weekend, almost a month after he turned 2!

My daughter however, is an entirely different story.  She had so much hair prior to being born that it was visible on ultrasound beginning when I was 7 months pregnant with her! She was born with a full head of hair and it just has continued to grow up and up.  When we go out, we always hear people saying "look at that baby with all that hair!" as we walk past.

I decided a few weeks ago that it was time to put some hairbows in Vivian's wild hair, so I spent some time surfing around Etsy looking for the cutest bows.

I found several that I liked at an Etsy shop called SweetBittyBows. They arrived promptly and were packaged well. I was so excited to open the package and get the bows in her hair! I loved the no slip clips- they were easy to use and clip in her hair, and they stayed put through all of Vivian's rolling around on her playmat. The only problem I have with the clips is trying to explain to my son why he can't wear them in his hair! I bought little clips at this site, but the store also carries hair bows, princess puffs, hats and headbands.

If you're looking for some cute hair accessories, go check this site out.

Review: Frubi shades

Have you ever tried to keep a pair of sunglasses on a baby or toddler's face? I'm not sure the amount of time that they stay put before being thrown onto the ground can even be measured in any units of time- it's THAT short!

Enter Frubi shades. I received a pair of these sunglasses for my toddler son to test.  I was a little nervous that he would be his typical contrary self and refuse to wear them. But I was so wrong to worry! I took them out of the packaging and Ethan immediately ran off with them into the living room and attempted to put them on himself. He couldn't quite work the velcro in back, so he brought them back to me to put on. And then he spent the next 30 minutes running around our condo wearing his new shades.

Frubi shades were designed by a leading ophthalmologist. They are a special, patented eyewear which is molded into one soft piece for comfort and safety.  Frubi points out that the human eye is 10 times more sensitive to harmful UV rays than your skin- so our eyes need protecting! As with anything else, getting kids started early with wearing sunglasses is so important!

I like the Frubi shades because they are one large piece and they fasten in back so that Ethan can't take them off and throw them. And they are soft, so I don't worry about him running around in them and hurting himself when he falls over. I also like that one pair of shades is designed to fit a child from age 6 months to 6 years.  One less thing that my kids are going to outgrow quickly!

The shades come in a variety of colors and patterns and can be bought at the Frubi website for 9.99.

Review: Eden Fantasys

If you read my other blog you know that I am both a happily married woman as well as a conservative Christian.  As a Christian, I feel strongly about a lot of things, and one of those is that sex in marriage is a good and wonderful thing, and that God gave us sex as a gift to help us draw closer in our marriages. But, if you read my blog you also know that I have a 2-year-old and a 3-month-old, both born via c-section. So, I have spent the majority of the last three years either pregnant or recovering from a c-section or nursing or some combination of those. Or dealing with a teething baby. Or a baby with a cold. Or a baby with the stomach flu. You moms know what I mean. Do you know what having a 2-year-old and a 3-month-old does to your sex life, even when you try to make it a priority?

Thanks to my involvement over at the Product Review Place, I had the opportunity to review a product from Eden Fantasys. (Note- although there's nothing objectionable on the Eden Fantasys page, it's still probably not work-appropriate, and I wouldn't click on it if you have a small child hanging over your shoulder).  I emailed the very nice person from Eden Fantasys and told him that I would like to review a product, but that I was fairly new to the whole adult toys thing and needed recommendations for "starter products".  He recommended the sensual products line, so my husband and I went and checked it out.

Eden Fantasys is organized by category- so you can easily find what you're looking for, whether it's a sex toy for use as a couple or a vibrator or lingerie or something from the sensual love line.  Inside each category things are further subcategorized. In the sensual love line there are links to massage accessories, bath items and edible treats.  We really liked the product reviews for the items, it helped to know what real people thought about the products that they had purchased.  Another helpful feature of the site is the safety index. This tells you if the product that you're looking at has ingredients like latex in it, so if there's something you're sensitive to, it's easy to identify and avoid those items.

I'm not going to tell you what product we ended up choosing and reviewing, but let's say we were pleased. Thanks to teething kids who don't sleep well, we haven't had the opportunity to test the product as thoroughly as we would like, but we have plans to do so soon.  :)  I have to say, even the act of going through the site and choosing a product that looked fun to us was a good experience for us as a couple. It helped get our minds off of parenting for a while and remind us that we are first and foremost husband and wife and lovers.  We had fun choosing the product and waiting for it to arrive and I had fun sending sexy messages to my husband with hints about the evening ahead when the package did arrive. The packaging was very discreet, just in a plain box, with nothing to indicate that the item inside is from Eden Fantasys. The shipping label just said "Web Merchants".  A similarly discreet note shows up on your credit card when you place the order, so you don't have to worry about that either.

So, if you're looking for something fun to spice up your sex life, try the Eden Fantasys site. You wont be disappointed!

Giveaway!: Baby/Toddler Bistro Box from Baby Bistro Brands-CLOSED

Read my full review of the Toddler Bistro Box here.

Being a new mom is an experience that's full of questions and unknowns and learning experiences.  One of the biggest unknowns and stresses for me when I had my first child was figuring out how to do solid foods. I was totally overwhelmed with concerns about what to feed him and when and how.  And, to add to the stress, I am one of the world's worst cooks, so had no idea how to go about making nutritious baby food that my son would actually eat.

I wish I had known about the Baby Bistro Box back then, I think it would have saved me an enormous amount of time and energy. The Baby Bistro Box has information for the entire first year of a baby's life, including information on prenatal, breastfeeding and formula feeding, in addition to information on solid foods for babies.

From the Baby Bistro Brands website:
"Our ever-popular firstborn product, the Baby Bistro Box, now in its second edition, provides up-to-date nutritional information you need to feed your baby for the first twelve months. It includes safety rules, shopping tips, numerous recipes, and prenatal suggestions. The recipe card format allows you to find the information you want, when you need it, and then take it with you! The box is fun to read, written in a no stress "girlfriend" style, and is inviting to look at with its soft colors and artwork. Let it help you make the first year with your baby the best it can be."

And, for those of us with slightly older kids, Baby Bistro Brands also makes a Toddler Bistro Box!

 From their website:
"The Toddler Bistro Box was conceived in response to moms who were finding it difficult to come up with ideas of how and what to feed their toddlers! The Toddler Bistro Box covers from 1-3 years, and includes the latest on food and environmental safety, easy recipes, shopping tips, nutrient and supplement needs, toddler personality tendencies, and creative activities. The recipe card format allows parents easy access to information they need as well as the ability to take cards with them to the store. Fun, playful artwork is inviting and inspires tired minds with innovative, healthy feeding ideas. The Toddler Bistro Box supports parents in their efforts to grow healthy, happy toddlers!"

Guess what? One of you gets to win either the Baby Bistro Box or the Toddler Bistro Box! (United States mailing addresses only, sorry!)

Mandatory entry:
Visit the website and let me know which topic on "the menu" for either box looks most interesting to you. Please be sure your email address is in your comment (if your email address is visible in your blog profile, then you don't need to leave it in the comment).

Extra entries (please leave a separate comment for each extra entry):
1) Follow my blog (if you're already a follower, just leave a comment indicating that).
