I have to admit, I have never watched an episode of Project Runway, I couldn't identify Christian Siriano's clothing designs in a lineup and I would never use the word "fierce" in a conversation. Thanks to my involvement at Product Review Place, I was given the opportunity to receive and review Christian Siriano's new book "Fierce Style: How to Be Your Most Fabulous Self" and I jumped at it. Mostly because I was intrigued by the subtitle of this book- "how to be your most fabulous self!". If there's anyone in need of some hints on fabulousness, it's definitely me!
In the last year, I've gone from being a working mom of one to a stay-at-home mom of two. When I was working, I generally dressed up everyday, even though I work in Seattle, where casual is king. I just feel better when I'm wearing a skirt and heels. But that's not practical when I'm at home with two messy kids, so I've lost what little style I had. I live in the mom uniform of jeans and monochromatic shirts.
So, I was skeptical when I started to look through the book, how could someone with such a wild and crazy sense of style have any advice that is practical for a stay-at-home-mom, but that lasted for about 30 seconds and soon I was marking great ideas on almost every page.
The book is divided into 4 sections, each with short, to-the-point chapters. It covers a huge variety of topics. Some of the ones that really spoke to me were the section on taking chances, at any age. Just because I'm a 32-year-old mom doesn't mean I don't deserve to try out some stylish clothes! And if something doesn't work for me, that doesn't mean I should give up, I just need to try something different! I also really appreciated the section on how to easily "fab up" your outfit- complete with suggestions for people who wear jeans, t-shirts, vests, neutrals, suits or button-down shirts. Because, let's be honest, those are the fashion sinkholes that most of us get trapped in.
The book also has suggestions on clothing styles by body type. This is something that always baffles me- my friends are all taller than I am, or thinner, so I've never known who to ask about dressing for my short, curvy body type. But Christian covers that!
And there's a great section of the book on looking fierce on a budge. We all need that these days!
This book is a fun, easy read for anyone, whether you're a mom like me, wanting to add a bit of fashion to the mom uniform, or a fashionista. In addition to the great advice, the book has lots of great pictures of fun and beautiful fashion, so it's a treat for the eyes as well.
